Distinguishing Characteristics:  Different breeds can have many different attributes. Males have a beard, horns, a rank odor, and are generally larger than the females. The horns are hollow, and grow either scimitar or corkscrew. The hair is generally straight, but some breeds have a wool undercoat. Coat color varies, and can be black, white, red, and brown.

This species produces the most common type of goat milk used for cheese, milk, and other dairy products.


They are known for their adaptability to cold weather and mountainous environments.


Almost all male alpine goats have beards, but sometimes female goats can have beards too.


Alpine goats are often broken up into geographic distinctions, including the French Alpine, British Alpine, and American Alpine.
